James Dean Pole, Bakersfield, California

James Dean was stopped at this very site on September 30, 1955 around 3:30 PM.

Recognize that date? It's the date that Dean met his untimely death. So what makes this telephone pole so special?
 
James Dean was on his way over to Paso Robles, California when he was stopped along Highway 99 North by Officer Otie V Hunter. Officer Hunter clocked Dean doing 70 MPH. He was issued a speeding ticket, which he signed, making this location the spot where James Dean gave his very last autograph.
 
3 hours later, James Dean was in a car accident that claimed the 24 year old actors life.

To locate the pole, you need to be south of Bakersfield, heading northbound on Highway 99. This location is approximately one mile before the Maricopa/Taft exit at pole marker 166.
